What makes it a religion……

So this is another off topic topic for this month but when I covered Raelism I found make self asking what makes a reigion a reigion and not a cult? Well lets look at thier definations first.
A cult refers to a group whose beliefs or practices are considered strange. The word originally denoted a system of ritual practices. The narrower, derogatory sense of the word is a product of the 20th century, especially since the 1980s, and is considered subjective. It is also a result of the anti-cult movement which uses the word in reference to groups seen as authoritarian, exploitative and possibly dangerous. The word implies a group which is a minority in a given society.

Religion is defined as a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of life and the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a supernatural agency, or human beings’ relation to that which they regard as holy, sacred, spiritual, or divine. Many religions have narratives, symbols, traditions and sacred histories that are intended to give meaning to life. They tend to derive morality, ethics, religious laws or a preferred lifestyle from their ideas about the cosmos and human nature.

But what really makes the difference between the two is clts are absent of the betterment of the individual person but rather than leader only. Cults try to subvert the human will with total and complete obedience to the leader of a group or sect. Religion on the other hand is about the betterment of the individual first and foremost with helping the community or group as only of thier own betterment.

It’s still probley not as cut and dry as all this but it does give an idea on how the difference is made.
